Eastpointe MI 48021
Previously called as East Detroit, Eastpointe is a city in Macomb County, Michigan. Forming a part of Metro Detroit, it borders 8 Mile Road and the northern area of Detroit. Eastpointe has a total residence of 32,442 according to the 2010 US Census Bureau report.
Eastpointe community considers their city as the “Gateway to Macomb County” due to its location. Sitting within the border of Macomb and Wayne Counties, it is surrounded by the cities of Harper Woods, Detroit, Warren, Roseville, and St. Clair Shores.
In the 1830s, the German and Irish migrants formed the first settlers in the area. For almost a century, locals call it as “Half-Way” because of its unique location between Detroit and Mount Clemens, the county seat of Macomb County. And soon their post office was built under the same moniker. The name was officially adopted in December 1924 as Halfway and incorporated as East Detroit City in January 1929.
However, most of its residents became a part of Erin Township years prior to 1924. In 1992, the residents voted to change its name to Eastpointe under a referendum. Locals wanted to remove any perceived associated with its neighboring city of Detroit. The move was due to having a lack of their community identity. They added the “pointe” suffix to associate their city to Grosse Pointes, a more affluent city.
However, their school district’s name remained unchanged as East Detroit Public School District. The public school later changed its name in 2017 and adopted its official name as Eastpointe Community Schools to align with its community name. The city has four elementary schools, one middle school, Eastpointe Middle School, and one high school Eastpointe High School. Eastpointe caters to Macomb County residents living within the boundaries of Eastpointe and the southeastern portion of the City of Warren.
