Farmington Hills

Farmington Hills MI

Farmington Hills ranks as the second largest city in Oakland County, Michigan with a total population of 79, and 740 residents listed at the 2010 census. Considered by many as one of the upscale areas in the northwestern suburbs of Metropolitan Detroit, it has great access to many other neighboring towns and cities like Ann Arbor.

Because of the names, Farmington and Farmington Hills are often misinterpreted as one; Farmington Hills boasts more ‘big city amenities’. Farmington Hills features a vintage cinema, exotic car dealerships, great art galleries, shops, and a recently renovated downtown. They also have great public parks such as Heritage Park. Some of the historical sites in Farmington Hills include the Governor Warner Mansion and Longacre House. Different they may be they have one thing in common – the Farmington Public School system both served the two cities. Farmington Public School is well known to have high-quality teaching standards and considered as one of the best public school systems in Michigan.

Quality of Life

Ranking consistently as one of the safest cities in the country, Farmington Hills can easily attract investors across the globe. As a result of their peaceful community, the city serves as a business center within the greater Detroit area.

The Holocaust Memorial Center, the only one of its kind is located in Farmington Hills. Formerly located in nearby West Bloomfield Township but since it expanded it moved to Farmington Hills. The memorial center aims to educate the public about real tragic events of the Holocaust.

Early Years

Early settlers first arrived in Farmington around the 1800s and soon developed into a city that continues to grow. As more people settled in the area, the area extended to the north where Farmington Hills is now located. Due to its location, locals used to call the city as the Village of North Farmington. The two neighboring cities – Farmington and Farmington Hills became two separate townships in 1972 when residents decided to vote unanimously for it.

These two cities experienced rapid economic growth during the late 1940s up until the early 1950s. Before the World War II exploded, the city is primarily made up of farms. After the war, people started moving out from other neighboring cities and settled into the suburbs of Farmington and Farmington Hills. Within years, the population steadily grew and quickly urbanized and the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills rank as two of the wealthiest cities in the country.

Despite its urbanization, Farmington Hills surprisingly preserved its small-town vibe. Their street is still laid out as originally planned back in the days. Their main street retained its downtown design which stands as the heart of the city.
