Grosse Pointe Park
According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Grosse Pointe Park has a total population of 11,555 and is a part of Wayne Count in Michigan. It borders the Detroit facing the southern part of Lake St. Clair and considered to have the oldest overall housing stock of all Grosse Pointes. Located at the westernmost area of Grosse Pointe communities, it only 6 miles east of downtown Detroit where residents commonly commute to the city. Locals simply call Grosse Pointe Park as “The Park” or “GPP”.
Stretching for about 3.71 square miles with some parts in Lake St. Clair, Grosse Pointe Park borders Mack Avenue to the northwest, of Grosse Pointe along Cadieux Road to the northeast, Alter Road, and Wayburn to the southwest.
Back then, the city was incorporated as the Village of Fairview. The area where Gross Pointe Farms stands today covers Cadieux Road in the east in Grosse Pointe Township and Bewick Street in the west. During the fast economic growth of Detroit during the early 1900s, the city annexed part of the Bewick Township in 1907. Fearing that Detroit will soon be annexed more of its village, the area east of Alter Road was incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe Park a year later. Wanting to have a full independence from the ever-expanding Detroit, the village soon filled their incorporation as a city in 1950.
The Park has one of the most diverse housing communities in all of Grosse Pointes. Built to have a gridded pattern flowing out of Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park has housing communities ranges from single to multiple brick houses, traditional single detached homes to multimillion-dollar mansions on its lakeshores. Most of the houses were built before the World War II broke out and was designed using the finest and expensive materials. Areas such as Bishop, Kensington, Yorkshire, Edgemont Park, Windmill Pointe Drive, Buckingham, Berkshire, Balfour, Middlesex, and many others have huge and historical houses in the city. Just like most of the cities in Michigan, Grosse Pointe Park was built on a swampy land south of Jefferson Avenue, starting from Detroit River and lasting through the edge of Lake St. Clair.
