Grosse Pointe Woods

Grosse Pointe Woods

Grosse Pointe Woods stands as the largest area of all Grosse Pointe communities with a total population of 16, 135 as per 2010 census. A part of Wayne County Michigan, this suburban city is located 10 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. Measuring about 3.25 square mile it’s the only city in the five “Grosse Pointe” that doesn’t border Lake St. Clair.

Most of the early settlers of Grosse Pointe Woods can be traced back from people moving out of Detroit after the War of 1812. These were predominantly Protestant states headed by the young Presbyterian of Scottish lineage, Rev. John Monteith. When Governor Cass asked for a Protestant missionary for the area of which Grosse Pointe will soon rise, Rev. Monteith did not hesitate and went on to his journey.

Alongside with Father Richard, the two went on to their mission which eventually helped built the foundation of the University of Michigan in 1821. Because of their noble act and strong dedication, elementary schools in Grosse Pointes were named after these two pioneer educators.

Despite its unfavorable land surveys, Grosse Pointe was seen as a peaceful place to live in. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, immigration increased rapidly in the area. During this time, French was the main language used in Detroit but soon loses its significance during the Civil War. In 1838, the Presque Isle Lighthouse was built to guide farmers and Indians paddling from their wooden canoes to sell farm produce.

But in 1832, when the cholera epidemic broke out in Detroit, it took 96 lives which left 24 children orphaned. Several years later, Belgian settled in parts of Grosse Pointe and soon Belgian priests began serving in a number of churches. Grosse Pointe Woods experience rapid changed during the mid-19th century. As more people settled in town, the need for better governance became apparent. Elections for incorporations started in 1879 as Grosse Pointe Village.

A local tavern caused quite a stir in town and it ignited a dispute, it parted ways as the town was divided into two villages in 1893.

Residents northeast of Fisher Road objected Termont’s roadhouse near Alger Place and eventually established as Grosse Pointe Park. The other side of the village was taken by the city of Detroit. The area where Grosse Pointe Woods will soon become first named as the Village of Lochmoor and annexed Stanhope-Allard strip in 1931.
