Northville Michigan 48167
Northville is a city located in two different counties in Michigan – Oakland, and Wayne. Majority of the city rest in Oakland County and borders Novi City, while some areas sit in Wayne County and are surrounded by the nearby Northville Township. This suburban area is considered part of Metro Detroit with a population of 5,970 according to the 2010 US census.
Located about 21 miles northeast of Ann Arbor and northwest of Detroit, early settlers arrived in 1825. Novi was later incorporated as a village in 1867. It was initially part of the two communities within Plymouth Township until Northville Township separated establishing their own township in 1898.
In 1955, the city was incorporated claiming most of the boundaries of the Village of Northville. It also included some portion in Northville Townships in Wayne County and Novi Township in Oakland County. Within the next decades, Northville continued to expand and had annexation some parts of Novi Townships and the Village of Novi. Until today, the city continues extending its territory with the most recent move to expand Rural Hill Cemetery.
Northville thrived well throughout the Victorian era where many of its downtown homes are designed after Queen Anne styled architecture. To celebrate this monumental part of their history, Northville held its Victorian Festival, the “Heritage Festival” every September. In 1853, the community built their own schoolhouse and Jacob Ramsdell taught the first class.
Their economic growth flourished until 1919 when Henry Ford acquired a factory in the city and established their machinery plants. Ford opened the Northville Valve Plant in 1936 and expanded in 1956. It was the main source parts particularly valves for Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln vehicle. Unfortunately, the factory closed down in 1981 and re-purposed for offices and a health club.
By 1925, the city had its own theater opened called the Penniman-Allen Theater and entertained Northville residents until 1950s. When it reopened as the Marquis Theater in 1978, it houses live children’s theater. Back then, skiing was the main event of the year where local government held competitions.
