Shelby Township

Shelby Township MI- 48315, 48316, 48317

According to the 2010 census, Shelby is civil township with a population of 73,804 residents in Oceana County in Michigan and one of the fastest growing communities in Metro Detroit. Officially called as the Charter Township of Shelby it’s designated to Macomb County, Michigan. Shelby Township is an affluent suburb about 15 miles north of Detroit.

The township has a growing and diverse community with modern day living amenities while preserving its rich heritage. An 1822 farmhouse, the oldest structure in town still stands proudly today in contrast to newly built modern homes around it. Their 1871 schoolhouse called Andres School Museum provides an educational experience for everyone who visits their town. The Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal, America’s most ambitious canal projects, runs through the township.

The Michigan state surveyed the area and opened its first general land sales in 1818. By 1827, Shelby was designated as a township. One of the busiest districts, the settlement of Disco located at the corners of 24 Mile Road and Van Dyke was established during the 1830s. It became the center of trade as various industries starting to open their stores within the area like the 1928 Packard Proving Grounds.

On April 12, 1827, the Michigan Territorial Legislature declared Shelby as a township and a civil government was soon organized. It initially included the Jefferson area until it had its own independence on March 17, 1835. Not long after, Jefferson was renamed as Sterling on March 6, 1838. Another township at the southern part of Shelby, Utica originally incorporated as a village on March 9, 1838. It did last but the village was soon incorporated on May 10, 1877.

Disco had its own post office from May 5, 1854, lasting until July 31, 1906. In which some of streets and county road maps still bear the name Disco. Since Shelby Township took their history seriously, the Shelby Township Historical Society dedicate an entire historical significance of the area called the “The Lost Village of Disco”.
