Farmington

Farmington MI

Farmington is part of Oakland County in Michigan and a city in the northern suburbs of Detroit. In a 2010 census, Farmington house about 10,372 residents. It is almost entirely surrounded by Farmington Hills with an exception of a tiny portion in the south which was bordered by the city of Livonia.

History

For several decades in the past, Farmington remains almost an average American community. But in 2009, the city received major renovations in many of its famous landmarks and attractions. The city’s remodeling includes the Grand River Avenue, Farmington Pavilion, and even having brick paver sidewalks. In all of Michigan cities, Farmington is known for its historic downtown featuring elegant Victorian designed homes and Farmington Public Schools which rank as one of Michigan’s best public school systems.

The city of Farmington performed so well that CNNMoney.com listed the city as the 55th Best Places to Live in the US in 2007. After several years it rose up as the 27th Best Places to Live in 2013 with nearly $3 million of development and renovations costs.

Back in the days, there Native American trails used to traversed in Farmington – the Grand River Trail, the Orchard Lake Trail, and the Shiawassee Trail. Arthur Power traveled from New York like any other Oakland pioneers and became the first settler of Farmington in 1824. Known as a Quaker, there are many like him who followed in his footsteps and migrated to the area. Because of its early settlers, the city was first known as Quakertown. It soon changed its name to Farmington, named after Power’s hometown, Farmington, New York.

In 1825, Dr. Ezekiel Webb founded the first ever Post Office and he became the first postmaster and doctor in Farmington. Three years later, the city built its first school in 1828. The Legislative Council of the Michigan Territory incorporated Farmington as a township in 1827 which then became a village in 1867. They held their town meeting at different locations until their Town Hall was completed around 1876. Farmington received its designation as a rule city in 1926.

During the 1950s Farmington serves as a great farming community but during the post-war era, people started to move out of Detroit and settled in the city. Soon enough, the once rural area is now fast transforming into a suburban area. Today, Farmington is known to have pleasant communities with great historical significance, well preserved architectural buildings and a nice shopping district.
