Grosse Pointe Farms

Grosse Pointe Farms or what local used to say as just “The Farms” is famous for its upscale suburban living with an amazing view of Lake St. Clair in southeastern Michigan. Measuring around 12.32 square miles with 9.57 square miles of water, Grosse Pointe Farms has one of the most beautiful views in this part of the state. A part of Wayne County, it has a total population of 9, 479 according to the 2010 US census. It borders Detroit on the north, Canada and Lake St. Clain on the south and east, Grosse Pointe on the west, and Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores on the northeast.

Since its incorporation in 1892, Grosse Pointe Farms is known to have very high-quality standards of living in the US with reputable schools and great community housing stock. Its local governance always put the safety and welfare of its residents first, which can be seen on their community services and local festivities year round.

Unlike other ‘Grosse Pointe’ communities, Grosse Pointe Farms has a very distinctive topography and street plan. The town was established partly on the same street plan as Detroit but has more curving and irregular street paths. Unlike Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Park which are built on a flat terrain, a slightly elevated ridge runs through the center of Grosse Pointe Farms. Because of this, the view from the city varies widely, from ranch houses to old homes of bungalows and mansions, Grosse Pointe Farms also boasts of luxurious estate-style homes. Its downtown has unique neo-traditional storefronts dotted with several historic building on Kercheval Avenue.

Early settlers used to call a vast empty land as Grosse Pointe. Grosse Pointe Farms used to be part of that community and was initially incorporated as the Village of Grosse Point in 1879. As more people came to settle in the area, the land extended northeast and by 1889 that area near Provencal Road northeast of Cadieux Road. But after a dispute over the location of a tavern, a small portion of the village located east of Fisher Road established a community and became the Village of Grosse Pointe Farms in 1893. It later joined the united states as a city in 1949.
