Housing about 9,132 residents Plymouth is entirely surrounded by the Charter Township of Plymouth. It is a city in Wayne County Michigan measuring about 2.21 square miles of and .01 square miles of water. Within the proximity of Ann Arbor and Detroit, Plymouth features a wide variety of shops and great restaurants surrounding Kellogg Park.
The city offers great amenities and recreational activities for its residents. As it held many festivities throughout the year, including the Fall Festival, Art in the Park, and Ice Sculpture Spectacular. Plymouth boasts of an NHL size ice arena for all age groups and twelve city parks.
The largest and oldest ice carving festival in entire North America happens in the city celebrates its Plymouth Ice Spectacular every last week of January. It started in 1982 spearheaded by Scott Lorenz at the age of 25; lasting for several days, the festival attracts no less than half a million spectators each year. Plymouth Ice Spectacular helped put ice carving competition into the map as a world-class and artistic competitive event. Another famous festival, the Green Street Fair started way back 2008 featured exhibitions and activities that are all about green or being green. Celebrated during the month of May, this had become a yearly tradition of the city that also draws out crowds up to 90,000 people.
Its school district the Plymouth-Canton school district ranks as the most populated high school campuses in the US. Measuring about 305 acres of land and comprises of three high schools it can accommodate 6,500 students and 800 faculty members.
Early settlers came into the area where Plymouth will soon become around 1867. People started to refer to the village as Plymouth since most of its residents came from another nearby state in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The first recorded settlers in Plymouth were Benjamin and William Starkweather, both were farmers from Preston, Connecticut. They bought about 240 of combined acres of land from the US government for $1.25 per acre.
Another famous residence, John Kellogg arrived in Plymouth in 1832 from New York and built the Plymouth House near Ann Arbor Trail and Main Street. His house is known to today as Kellogg Park, the de facto downtown of Plymouth.
The US Territorial Governor Cass declared the area as Plymouth in 1827. Back then, it was considered as a major township comprising of Canton, Northville, and of course, Plymouth. It received its identity as a city in 1932.
