Located in the northern suburbs of Oakland County in Metro Detroit, Bloomfield Hills has one of the most unique locations in Michigan. Its neighboring city, Bloomfield Township almost surrounded Bloomfield Hills with a total population of just 3,869 residents. But even with its relatively small population, it’s located in some of the most historic sites listed on the national register of historic places such as the National Historic Landmark and Cranbrook Educational Community.
The city serves as the headquarters of Acme Group which consists of Acme Mills, Fairway Products, and Great Lakes Filters. Other big companies like Taubman Centers, Princeton Enterprises, TIP Capital, Bloomfield Hills Bancorp, Gregory J. Schwartz & Co., Larson Realty Group, Reverie, BlackEagle Partners, Inc., and many more choose the city as their main center of operations.
Oakland County divided into townships on June 28, 1820, which composes of Pontiac Township and Bloomfield Township. The area where Bloomfield Hills stand today was nothing but a farming area until the 20th century. Detroit’s wealthiest men bought up the land which eventually became a village in 1927. In 1932, its residents united to incorporate the area as a city to avoid joining Birmingham.
Aside from its prosperous economy, many filmmakers and novelists choose Bloomfield Hills as their perfect set locations. It was the setting in some of the Hollywood movies like The Upside of Anger in 2005, Out of Sight with Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney. The novels written by Elmore Leonard described the most prominent street in Bloomfield as “Vaughan Road”. The novel Gilda Joyce: The Ladies of the Lake was set in a private school located in Bloomfield Hills.
Some of the most notable landmark churched in the country can be found in Bloomfield Hills like the Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian on Long Lake Road and the Christ the Church Cranbrook Episcopal which was consecrated in 1928. Originally founded in Birmingham, the Congregational Church of Birmingham United Church of Christ moved to Cranbrook Road in 1966.
