A part of Wayne County, in Detroit metropolitan area in Michigan, Dearborn Heights has a total population of 57,774 according to the 2010 US Census Bureau. Measuring about 11.75 square miles of land, Dearborn Heights has a watershed in its tail in the north branch of the Ecorse Creek or more commonly known as the Ecorse River. This part of the city is subject to flooding.

It houses about 22,266 households, and 14,591 families residing in the city with an estimated population density of 4,921 inhabitants per square mile. Dearborn racial group composes of 86.1% White, 7.9% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, and 1.0% from other races in the world. But this statistics is fast changing, in 2014, the Dearborn Height Community and Economic Development Director, Ron Amen said that Arabs grew about 25% of the city’s total population. Today, more Arab Americans are moving into the north end of the city than the southern area.

The local government noticed that many Arab businesses in Dearborn put up their branch operations in Dearborn Heights. It’s not a very unique thing to do as the city is considered as one of the bedroom communities in Michigan. The city government remains as the largest employer in Dearborn while the H.Y.P.E Athletics employed some 200 employees ranked as the second largest.

Dearborn started out as a village from two sections of Dearborn Township and about a quarter-mile away from the Inkster village. They filed their incorporation petitions on March 4, 1960, while the village of Inskter filled their own 3 days after on March 7, 1960. On June 20, 1960, the residents of Dearborn Heights elected their incorporations but were contradicted by Inkster village. A predominantly African American community, Inkster filed a lawsuit on the grounds of racial discrimination. They claimed that the shape of Dearborn Heights reflected a subliminal message of leaving them behind. However, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Inkster failed to demonstrate their grounds clearly and dismissed their lawsuit.
