Early Years

Early settlers first arrived in Farmington around the 1800s and soon developed into a city that continues to grow. As more people settled in the area, the area extended to the north where Farmington Hills is now located. Due to its location, locals used to call the city as the Village of North Farmington. The two neighboring cities – Farmington and Farmington Hills became two separate townships in 1972 when residents decided to vote unanimously for it.

These two cities experienced rapid economic growth during the late 1940s up until the early 1950s. Before the World War II exploded, the city is primarily made up of farms. After the war, people started moving out from other neighboring cities and settled into the suburbs of Farmington and Farmington Hills. Within years, the population steadily grew and quickly urbanized and the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills rank as two of the wealthiest cities in the country.

Despite its urbanization, Farmington Hills surprisingly preserved its small-town vibe. Their street is still laid out as originally planned back in the days. Their main street retained its downtown design which stands as the heart of the city.
