Derived from the Indian language meaning “Big Fish”, Keego Harbor is a city in Oakland County Michigan. Although named as ‘Harbor’ there is no actual harbor in the area, it only pertains to the communities along the lake’s shorelines. Its population is estimated around 2,970 at the 2010 census. During the 1990s, Joseph E. Sawyer Keego Harbor initially planned the city as resort and investment area. Sawyer dug up a canal connecting its harbor, the Dollar Lake to Cass Lake. The houses built along the Cass Lake belong to the western Oakland County, a place famous for its fun water activities.
Because of its very scenic landscape and ideal location, Keego Harbor attracted the wealthiest residents of Detroit. Drawn to its natural beauty, it became a resort town for the upper class. Even the famous Purple Gang of Detroit spent their summers along the crystal clear lake waters. Keego Harbor serves as the ideal place for boaters, beach lovers, and adventure seekers as this small yet very beautiful community offer a lot of water recreational activities for everyone. Within a short distance from their vacation houses, residents can enjoy swimming, fishing, and boating. Boaters and anglers love its proximity to other bodies of water like the Orchard Lake.
Keego Harbor was incorporated as a city in 1955 with just 2,769 residents along the shores of Cass Lake. Even with its size, Keego Harbor ranks as one of the highest educational standards in the state. It has its own elementary school – Roosevelt Elementary with a very love student to teacher ratio. Having 15 students per teacher, Keego Harbor provides a very good start to their resident’s education. The prestigious West Bloomfield School District oversees Keego Harbor educational system which features six National Exemplary Schools with over 2,500 personal computers and 400 laptops. It was so efficient that more than 94% of their students go to college and pursuing higher education.
Its local government keeps Keego Harbor community well intact as they help events year round such as ‘The Big Fish Festival’, basketball tournaments, dinner and dance nights. This creates opportunities for residents to mingle with each other.
